Nutritional Considerations

for Alzheimer’s Disease Victims.

Through proper Nutrition, an Alzheimer’s Victim’s mental decline might well become greatly slowed. In my studies of the various countries from which people visit this site to investigate about Alzheimer’s Disease, most queries are from ‘Western’ Nations. That’s a fairly good indication there is something in the Western diet… perhaps preservatives, perhaps other additives, perhaps quantity or any number of other variables etc. increase the propensity for Westerners to develop the disease. Caregivers, resolve to learn how you might slow the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease through proper nutrition.

As someone who couldn’t even begin to qualify as a medical layman, I present for your consideration this initial offering on nutritional health concerning Alzheimer’s Disease. As I discover more content to add to this Site, I’ll offer for your consideration additional perspectives from a variety of Medical Professionals as well as others whom I believe offer helpful information.

In my own history, for nearly three years I would alternate with Mom and my Step Dad living in their summer home. My work was principally late Spring through Early Fall. The change worked out well for both of us because about the time I quit work for the year… they went to live in a milder climate for the Winter. We’d see each other for about a week during each transition.

During one of the transitional Fall visits I recognized they hadn’t been eating properly. I spoke with my Step Dad’s daughter and asked her to consider making extra meals and air-tight wrap them for delivery the next time she visited them. She didn’t live too far from their Winter residence. In doing that, Mom and her Dad could be assured of at least a reasonably nutritious diet during the Winter.

When I again began the transition in the Spring I learned that they’d tried to work through a more local Senior Delivery care service, but my Step Dad didn’t like the food so he discontinued that option. Throughout the entire Winter then, they’d existed on inexpensive TV Dinners. That, I found out was due to the reality that Mom had forgotten how to cook. My Step Dad? That wasn’t his ‘job’. Coincidentally, during that visit it became extremely obvious something was wrong with Mom.

The easily recognized deterioration of their health, particularly my Mom’s, brought forth ‘decision time.’ I quit working and began pretty much full time care for both. Mom as a necessity and my Step Dad, naturally, as an integral part of the plan.

Initially, I didn’t fully understand what the problem with Mom was. Like most people previously far removed from Alzheimer’s, I had no clue Mom had become a Victim of the disease. It didn’t take me long to take her to a variety of medical professionals and it didn’t take the professionals long to diagnose her.

Then came the dilemma of not knowing what to do, who to see, what was the quickest way to learn, et al. Through my investigations however, I came across the name of Dr. David Perlmutter, MD, FACN, Board Certified Neurologist and internationally recognized leader in nutritional neurology. After doing due diligence with respect to investigating his credentials and record, I sent away for his nutritional product called, ‘Brain Sustain’ (And later, I added capsules called ‘Vinpocetine’.)

Its important to note that during the first few months I spent with Mom she was on a very rapid mental decline. It was a stair step decline. She would stabilize for a short while and then dramatically dive into greater depths of confusion, disorientation, despair, et al. Except for comforting her and fulfilling obvious care taking responsibilities, nothing I could do seemed to make any difference.

Then Dr. Perlmutter’s ‘Brain Sustain’ arrived.

Now let me say that it is possible a neurologist or any other well trained person might suggest or even emphatically state the Brain Sustain was not responsible for the HUGE reduction in the speed of the stair step decline my Mom was experiencing – I’m not medically trained to know. I do know, however, that that is precisely what happened. Yes, my Mom continues her decline. But, shortly after she began takingBrain Sustain‘, the speed of her mental decline reduced… considerably. Considerably. And, for the most part her decline became one which was typically a more slow, smooth descent, rather than a rapid stair step decline she initially traveled upon.

It sure makes sense that due to individual history, physiology, et al, the results will vary with each person. But as for Mom, in my medically ignorant opinion she went downhill more during the first several months I was with her than she did over the first year to year and a half… after having begun …’Brain Sustain’. As far as I’m concerned, ‘Brain Sustain’ has been a HUGE factor in Mom not having slid further, faster.

It’s also noteworthy to mention – though there is certainly no way to prove it had any impact – that the supply of Brain Sustain became non existent for a rather long period of time. I did notice a rather sharp decline in Mom during the time she was unable to partake of Dr. Perlmutter’s product.

NO. I am not being paid nor in any way compensated for writing that which you’ve just read. As far as I’m concerned, in a very real way for all practical purposes, ‘Brain Sustain’ has been a life saver. Will the same thing happen for you? Who knows? I couldn’t begin to say.
